More About KSKQ 94.9 FM LOW POWER COMMUNITY RADIO:
http://www.kskq.org/
KSKQ is a newly forming low power (100 Watt) Community Radio Station. Its studio is located in the Industrial District of Ashland. Currently KSKQ is streaming locally- produced and national subscription programming over the internet at
http://www.kskq.org .
KSKQ fills the niche in the Rogue Valley for a locally-owned, independent radio source, where any citizen or group can "make radio happen." Producers must be willing to become members of the station, and they must be trained in the technical aspects and protocols of producing radio. Current programming proposals include a wide variety of shows: language and culture; music of all sorts: blues, rock and classical; local news and public interest; senior issues and much more. We are an affiliate of Pacifica Radio--a national radio source--and are currently streaming "Democracy Now" and "Free Speech Radio News."
Since January of 2005, more than 200 community residents have become members and supporters of KSKQ. Volunteers have logged more than 11,000 hours in formation activities, governance, fundraising, technical aspects, and radio program creation. KSKQ is a true community-building project.
KSKQ is working to have its antenna up and to be broadcasting soon. To do so we must raise about $28,000 for one-time start-up costs and we must locate an adequate site for the antenna within the circle proscribed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The start-up equipment and engineering costs will be raised through foundation and city grants. Costs for ongoing operations will come through a continual stream of memberships and fundraising events. Once the station is broadcasting on-air, program underwriting will be sought from local business sponsors and events. The annual operating budget will be about $20,000 the first year and about $35,000 the second year.
Currently, all work for the station is carried out by a core group of experienced volunteers, called the Interim Steering Committee, along with our newly-trained volunteer producers. During the first year of on-air operations, KSKQ will hire three part-time paid positions, gradually building those positions to full-time. Stage three--probably several years down the road--is to build the capacity to operate completely "off the grid" through wind and solar power.
The Interim Steering Committee will convert to a permanent governing body within six months after going on-air. KSKQ is a project under the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon, a 501(c)(3) non-profit with a 12-year active presence in the Rogue Valley. The website of the Multicultural Association is www.mcaso.org .
