International Women's Day in Ashland

Ashlander, 07.03.2010 17:38

This past Saturday the Third Annual Rogue Valley Celebration of International Women’s Day took place at Southern Oregon University. It began with a parade which started at Triangle Park and ended at the SOU Student Union. The parade was led by three large puppets as it made its way down Siskiyou Blvd with about 150 people participating.

Once the parade arrived at SOU there was an afternoon of food and entertainment. This year the event was honoring the resiliency of African Women rising up in the midst of conflict. Ashland Mayor John Stromberg started off the afternoon with a proclamation. Some of the entertainment included drumming and dancing.

The supporters of the International Women’s Day 2010 celebration were Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, NW Seasonal Workers, Victim Services of Jackson County, Planned Parenthood, Bright Futures, Nursing Students without Border, Multicultural Resource Center, AAUW American Association of University Women, Women’s Resource Center, Rose Circle, American Cancer Society, Rogue Valley Coalition for Nuclear Abolition, Soroptimist International Ashland, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Circle of Grandmothers, and League of Women Voters.
