U.S. Social Forum Fundraiser - May 28

Jason Houk, 23.05.2010 21:43

Southern Oregon’s most radical singer/songwriters Patrick Dodd and Pete Herzog will perform together for a fundraiser to send delegates to the 2010 U.S. Social Forum in Detroit. At a time when most artists shy away from politics or controversial topics, Dodd and Herzog thrive on telling truth to power.

Patrick Dodd has sliced a path of musical resistance across two decades of American music and history. His eclectic style allows him to move from folk/ballads to rock to experimental music. Throughout all you find a common theme - "social justice". Patrick has been inspired by, and taken his music to the people, from forest defense camps to homeless camps, from living rooms to churches, from coffee houses to festivals, Dodd’s music helps inspire and empower.

Born in the city but living most of his life in the country, Pete Herzog started playing guitar at the age of 8. At an early age Herzog discovered blues, bluegrass, and other roots type music. Heavily influenced by rural music, the delta and country blues and the roots of bluegrass and jug band styles, Herzog has always been attracted to a common sound that reaches back through the ages and touches all people at a basic level.

According to his website, Herzog spent time working on the railroad as a gandydancer on a traveling steel gang, learning arhoolies and steel driving songs sung as they were originally given voice. When composing Herzog strives to make connections with those ancient places and feelings.

“I’ve lived most of my life in the country on a dirt road and spent countless hours pickin guitar on the back porch. To me the blues have always been more than three chords and twelve bars, sometimes one chord is plenty to tell the story and convey the feeling I’m trying to put out. The blues is mostly about a man and woman, the yin and yang, the light and dark, the tension and release, but it doesn’t always have to be sad. Some of my favorite blues are more about, I’m happy to see you, let’s do something about that.”

Herzog and Dodd will be performing at 7 pm on Friday, May 28th at the Headwaters Gallery, 84 Fourth St., Ashland Oregon. The performance is a fundraiser to send local delegates to the 2010 U.S. Social Forum in Detroit.

The United States Social Forum is a gathering, bringing together activists, organizers, people of color, working people, poor people, and indigenous people from across the United States. The goal of the gathering is to build unity around common goals of social justice, to build ties between organizations present at the event, and to help build a broader social justice movement.
