Lawmakers vow to continue fight for Medicare for All

Representatives Kucinich, Conyers & Sanders, 31-07-2010 - 14:41

Insurance Companies OUT! Comment: Southern Oregonians are waiting for the misguided "healthcare bill celebration" to subside so that we can get back to work and fix the greedy patient-killing corporate healthcare in this United States. On the 45th anniversary of Medicare it is reassuring to know that the vision of President Lyndon Johnson and the 89th Congress for an America that ensures health care for everyone, through a comprehensive Medicare for all, not only still lives, but is an inevitability.

The following text is an open letter to the single-payer community from Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, Rep. John Conyers Jr. of Michigan and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. It was released on the eve of Medicare’s 45th anniversary.

Congress of the United States
July 29, 2010

Dear friends of health care for all,

Community Rally Supports Jackson County Services

DO NOT CUT QUALITY PUBLIC SERVICES !, 15-07-2010 - 14:11

Jim Alexander's sign says it all July 14, 2010 -- Medford, Oregon

Jackson County citizens rallied with strong support for county workers & for county services. Local organizations such as the Southern Oregon Central Labor Council, Oregon Action and Jobs with Justice stood side by side with workers in front of the old Jackson County Courthouse. "Enough is enough: We Demand Quality Public Services."

- CONTRACT BARGAINING PROBLEMS -
The harsh, unreasonable and unwarranted demands of county negotiators do NOT have community support. The taxes we pay get the best bang for the buck when we invest in a workforce that provides top notch services. Jackson County employees have done their share in downsizing government this last few years. At its peak several years ago the Jackson County budget supported a workforce of over 700 employees while today the numbers are below 550. Fewer workers work harder while at the same time this workforce has made concessions year after year.

Move Your $MONEY$ Southern Oregon

SWITCH TO A LOCAL BANK OR CREDIT UNION!, 09-07-2010 - 00:48

Ashland, Oregon * Independence Day, 2010

Southern Oregon's MOVE YOUR MONEY campaign debuted on the main drag during Ashland's Fourth of July parade. The parade entry from Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice (SOJwJ) included the Jefferson State Rollers. The helpful swarm of female roller derby skaters blasted Ashland with thousands of tri-fold Move Your Money brochures which rank regional banks and credit unions with the big Wall Street banks. Any guess which work best for the local economy?

People want to support local economic development and are tired of Wall Street excesses that have crippled our country. Move Your Money is a campaign to move money away from the big greedy Wall Street Banks and put the bucks where they will do the most good right here at home.

Check out July 4 parade photos and look at the PDF brochure for a detailed description of Move Your MONEY Southern Oregon.

Vets for Peace #156 in Boatnik Parade 2010

Reported by Allen Hallmark, Member VfP #156, 29-05-2010 - 19:43

Grants Pass, Oregon - Memorial Day, 2010

Congratulations, Hal, Jim, Loree and all who worked so hard to put together our Veterans for Peace, Rogue Valley Chapter 156, entry in today's massive Boatnik parade in Grants Pass. The huge Peace Dove with the olive branch in her beak was gorgeous and impressive. It's difficult to believe how big this parade is -- our group was lucky to go down the street early and by the time we walked back to where we started, more than an hour later, there were still many groups waiting to start their journey.

Attached are a few photos that I snapped along the way (click on any to make larger)

MCRD takes Walmart to the OR Supreme Court

Rogue Indy Volunteer Reporters, 19-05-2010 - 15:50

Today legal history was made at North Medford High School, the venue where the Oregon Supreme Court heard the appeal of Medford Citizens for Responsible Development (MCRD), following their grant of the writ of certiorari. On the average, our high court decides to hear about five percent of the cases it is asked to hear on appeal, so it is a victory for MCRG just to be granted an Oregon Supreme Court hearing.

AAUW & Louie's CELEBRATE Pay Equity Day in Ashland, Oregon

WOMEN EARN ONLY 77 CENTS ON THE DOLLAR-, 22-04-2010 - 22:01

Amanda Casternova (l) Melissa Jensen (r) "More than 46 years after passage of the Equal Pay Act woman continue to earn only 77 cents on the dollar compared to our counterparts. On Tuesday, April 20th, we are marking this symbolic day when women's wages actually catch up to what men made at the end of 2009!"--this was written on a paper we were handed by three charming greeters at the door on Tuesday upon entering Louie's...

The welcome came from American Society of University Women (AAUW) as the all-women crew (see photos) met us at the door with an invitation for some education and fun. We entered and found a packed house and an atmosphere that felt down-home friendly.

Here are a couple pictures (click to make them bigger) & keep readin' to hear more about Equity Pay Day...

Feds kick Ashland, Oregon protesters off public property at OUR U.S. Post Office

OUR POST OFFICE ACTS LIKE IT IS PRIVATIZED (a fascist right wing goal), 16-04-2010 - 22:07

SERIOUS RIGHTS VIOLATIONS Does this sound like the United States, or the Soviet Union?--Ivend Holen

We had a wonderful action today... This looked a lot like the corporate walk of terror we had tried to pull together last halloween... Great Job everybody!. Channel 12 mistakenly put together their story saying that our "Tax Wall Street to fund jobs" message and our "bank locally" message were the same for all the tea bagger gatherings in southern Oregon. We love it. Nine people fighting corporate greed stole the show!--In solidarity, Wes Brain

Hi: The one sour note of yesterday's rally was when we were "kicked off" US Post Office property. See John Darling's article in the Ashland Daily Tidings:  http://3bl.me/ndwyg7

One of the superintendents came out of the Ashland Post Office to inform us that unless we stayed off US Post Office property he would call the US Postal Inspectors to arrest us. I asked him if the Post Office was not public property, and he said that it is not in Ashland, since they lease the property from the private sector.--Ivend Holen
