"Test An Optimist In All Kinds Of Weather"
Vegan1forPeace, 02-03-2008 - 14:16
The memorial circle in honor of Bennett Tanner became more of a banana shape precariously perched at the top of a hill, steep on one side, a cliff on the other. The banana kind of hung on a small cross with a star of David drawn onto it, surrounded by a casting of madrone berries to give the marker a glowing aura when viewed from below the hill.

Panel On Homelessness In Ashland Consensus?
Vegan1forPeace, 23-02-2008 - 09:09
The League of Women Voters of Ashland's panel discussion on "Homeless in Ashland" seemed to reach a consensus that the current paradigm of how services are provided doesn't have a solution. The leading promises are programs that give the homeless power and responsibility in providing services.

Update by Peter Phillips and David Kubiak
Many economists now doubt that government measures can prevent a
major recession given the severe slump in the housing market, the
subprime mortgage crisis, growing unemployment, declining consumer
spending, and record high oil prices. Even harder times for working
people are undoubtedly at hand, yet mainstream corporate media
continues to lavish more attention on the Super Bowl and celebrity
misadventures than measures to protect Americans from grave personal
economic harm. We are spun, mislead, propagandized and amused to
death by our media conglomerates and as a result the US has become
the best entertained and least informed society in the world.

Ashland City Attorney Selection Process
Southern Oregon Community Coalition, 18-07-2007 - 18:43
Southern Oregon Community Coalition worked with City of Ashland to increase transparency and public participation in choosing Ashland's Police Chief (last fall) and city attorney (this spring). After 3 community panels of attorney interviews of 4 'short list' candidates resulting in 2 recommended finalists, disagreement among councilors scuttled the entire process. City attorney selection will now start over, with a proposed higher attorney salary and executive search firm. Southern Oregon Community Coalition protested the action and recommended 4 positive steps to resolution in this open letter.

Eyes Wide Open, Its Not A Game Of Chess
Rogue Imc Volunteer, 13-07-2007 - 14:22
THE WAR IN IRAQ IS LIKELY LOOKED AT AS A GAME OF CHESS BY THE POWERFUL WAR-MONGERS WHO LIED AND LED SO MANY TO SENSELESS DEATH. The horrors of this illegal war, now occupation, are not for these powerful decision makers or their families. They just give the orders. The horrors for the most part are for the middle income and poor folks, the working class who fight and get killed.
EYES WIDE OPEN is an exhibit that offers a place of reverance for ALL who have fallen in the Iraq War...
This particular photo was captured by Arcata, CA resident Ruth Boyle who stopped by this year's Eyes Wide Open exhibit in Medford, Oregon. Ruth was early and volunteers were scampering about setting things up for the display. For this photograph the early light was just right...
Ruth Boyle's photograph is more than the result of someone just pushing the shutter button on a camera. This is art. Looking at the photo can lead to some heavy contemplation about war, death and some people's games.

Sneaky Greg Walden Townhall Comes on July 3rd - Brings Protest and Testimony
****************************************************************
Medford peace group to protest Walden’s “town hall” meeting
CPJ once again asks the time-honored question: “Where’s Walden?”
Citizens for Peace & Justice will rally outside the Jackson County Courthouse Auditorium on Oakdale in Medford from 10 to 10:30 am next Tuesday, July 3rd, before Rep. Greg Walden, R-OR, begins his “town hall” meeting to protest its inadequacies.
The reason for the protest is that Walden responded to calls for a town hall meeting on the cost of the Iraq War to Oregon by scheduling a one-hour meeting from 10:30 to 11:30 am on a weekday when few working people can attend. He also scheduled a similar meeting in Grants Pass for 1:30 pm to give him a good excuse for the Medford meeting not to run long.
